Introduction:
Big changes are coming to how the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) rates mental health issues. It’s like a major update to make sure veterans get the right support. The new rules are in 38 CFR Part 4, RIN 2900–AQ82, and they’re expected to start next year, though we don’t know the exact date yet.
At Warrior Allegiance, we’re all about helping veterans with their VA rating claims. These changes are a big deal for us, as they aim to better understand and help veterans with mental health challenges.
Why the Ratings Are Changing:
The VA decided it was time for a few changes based on advice from experts, input from groups helping veterans, and new medical knowledge. The goal is to better look at how mental health issues affect veterans in their daily lives.
How the Changes Help Veterans:
With more veterans facing tough situations like multiple deployments, it’s crucial to have accurate ways to measure how they’re affected. These changes aim to do just that, considering how experiences impact veterans and reflecting it in the ratings.
New Rating Formula for Mental Health:
The big update is a new rating formula for mental health. It looks at five areas: how you think, get along with others, handle daily tasks, move around, and take care of yourself. It’s a bit like a checklist inspired by what doctors and experts suggest.
- Five Functional Domains: This means checking how you do in five areas of your life.
- Measuring Your Abilities: They want to see how tough things are for you in each area—how hard and how often.
- Rating System for Each Area: Your overall rating will come from how hard things are in these areas. It goes from 10% to 100%. Importantly, they’re ditching the 0% rating for mental health issues, which is a big change.
- No More Separate Rules for Eating Disorders: They’re also getting rid of special rules just for eating disorders and including them in the new way of looking at things.
- What Veterans Think About It: They tested this new way with 100 veterans, and on average, they found it gives a higher rating for the challenges veterans face.

Tips for Understanding the Changes:
The rules include some notes to help everyone understand and use them better. They talk about dealing with more than one mental health issue, considering how medicine helps, and tips on measuring how often things get tough.
More Than Just Numbers:
Besides the new rules, there are some official things to follow like the Regulatory Flexibility Act and others. But what’s important is that the VA believes these new rules will generally mean more help for veterans compared to before.
When Do These Changes Start?
We know they’re happening next year, but we don’t have the exact date yet. It’s something we’re keeping an eye on at Warrior Allegiance.
In Conclusion:
These changes are a big step in making sure veterans get the right help for their mental health. If you’re a veteran looking for assistance, Warrior Allegiance is here for you.
