Assisting homeless

Introduction

Imagine giving up your freedom for many years and after serving, you do not get to enjoy your freedom by living on the streets? Veterans experiencing homelessness is a reality in our country, and even though the number of homeless veterans has decreased during the last years thanks to the efforts of the Department of Veterans Affairs, this adverse situation still exists in the country.

The Persistent Challenge

The VA has the goal of decreasing veteran homelessness, but it is important to mention that it’s also about ending it and not only decreasing it. The reason why is because last year out of the 40,401 veterans housed by the VA, 2443 returned homelessness. There are many reasons why veterans return to a homeless situation such as financial hardship, illness and many more. We want to focus on the resources available for you rather than the reasons why veterans become homeless.

Available Resources for Veterans

Consider the Housing program, a collaboration between HUD and the VA, offering rental assistance vouchers for veterans in privately owned housing. If you’re at risk of losing your home due to financial challenges, explore Supportive Services for Veterans Families (SSVF), providing assistance to prevent homelessness.

Preventing Homelessness

The Grant and Per Diem (GPD) program is a solution to prevent homelessness, offering veterans employment and transitional housing for a 24-month stay, with the goal of transitioning them into permanent housing. Four years ago, over 23,000 veterans participated, resulting in 13,000 obtaining permanent housing. For veterans facing challenges, illnesses, or rehabilitative needs, the Domiciliary Care for Homeless Veterans (DCHV) provides interdisciplinary clinical care, covering medical, psychiatric, vocational, educational, and social services. Another option for homeless or at-risk veterans is the Homeless Veteran Community Employment Services (HVCES), providing enhanced employment opportunities.

Extensive Resources

If you thought you ran out of options for your situation, do not worry! We will cover many more resources available to you. Go grab a snack and come back for more knowledge.

The next option, Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV), actively locates Veterans who are living in dangerous situations and connects them with VA bridge housing, health care, and case management services that promote safe, stable living arrangements. The Homeless Patient aligned Care Teams (HPACTs) program provides a medical home that will mainly focus on the needs of the veteran such as clinical care and social services.

Homeless veterans can access these medical homes with no appointment and can also receive substance use and mental health treatment. Studies indicate that veterans going through this service experience faster housing placement. All veterans, including those who are incarcerated, deserve access to these types of resources. The program facilitating this is called Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO), which collaboratively works with the Health Care for Reentry Veteran (HCRV). Both programs assist veterans in obtaining the necessary support for their reintegration into the community, guiding them on housing and employment opportunities.
